workshops and classes (for both adults and youths) at various DC, Maryland, and Virginia
locales.  These beginner to intermediate level courses are intended to give each participant
the opportunity to create a series of photographs from subject-rich environments, as well as

2008 Fine Art Black and White Photography Workshops and Classes
BASIC CLASSES:

Basic Black and White Film Photography
Dates: Mondays 7:15-9:30pm September 15 - October 27, 2008
(no class on September 29)

Ages: 14+

This course will teach you all the basics: from how a camera  
works, composing and shooting a photo, to processing and printing
your own black and white negatives.  Most materials (chemistry,
paper, and 5 rolls of film) included in fee.  Students are
encouraged to utilize the techniques learned in class through
weekly assignments.  Students supply 35mm camera and pay for
some processing.  Some cameras available for student use.

INTERMEDIATE CLASSES:

The Fine Art Black and White Print
Dates: Tuesdays 7:00-10:00pm October 7 - November 4, 2008
Ages: 16+

Enhance your black and white darkroom skills with this 5 week
demonstration-oriented course.  Subjects such as enlarger and
paper choices, burning,dodging, flashing, toning, contrast control,
spotting,and matting will be covered. Basic black and white
darkroom knowledge is required. Students provide negatives
(35mm or 120) and are encouraged to use the concepts learned
for printing during class time.  A materials fee of $30 is due to the
instructor at the first class.

demonstration-oriented course.  Subjects such as paper choices,
burning, dodging, flashing, toning, contrast control, spotting, and
matting will be covered.  Completion of the Basic B&W
Photography class or basic black and white darkroom knowledge is
required.  Students provide negatives (35mm or 120) from which to
print during class time.

B&W Photo Shooting Workshop at National Arboretum

Join fine art photographer David Ashman in a rare opportunity to be
part of a photo shooting workshop held at The US National
Arboretum in DC. The Arboretum offers not only unique plants,
trees, and shrubs, but numerous architecturally significant
structures and culturally diverse people as well.  Allowing for
individual attention, David demonstrates proper fine art
composition, exposure, lens experimentation, use of color filters,
natural lighting techniques, and provides guidance to any
technical inquiries that arise.  Participants should bring a 35mm or
medium format film camera, ample supply of black and white film,
and a tripod (if available).

contrast control, will be covered.  Beginner and intermediate level
students are both welcome.  Students can bring their own
negatives (35mm) from which to print, or use those provided.

In conjunction with FotoWeek DC, photographer and GCC
instructor David Ashman will professionally photograph your
artwork.  Having quality color images of your art are essential for
website and portfolio purposes.  Bring up to three 2D or 3D pieces
of art (limited to 5 ft. x 5 ft).  A CDROM with images of your art will
be mailed to you within one week of the workshop.
